BMW Part Number School

Out of all BMW part numbers, 99.9% have a typical pattern. The usual pattern is: 11-11-1-111-111. When you give a part number to someone, make sure that you break the number into the proper structure. For people who speak and think in part numbers, it’s hard to understand when someone says: “I need 13641468812.” No, you need 13-64-1-468-812!

The first two numbers of a part number are the most important, this will determine what category the part goes into.

If you find any errors or missing data, please let us know.

11

11-00-0-000-000

This section is for motor parts. Most of this section is long block parts (internal engine components). Also this section has motor mounts, hoses, fans, gaskets, water pumps and thermostats. If you want to get really crazy you can go to the second two numbers. The second two numbers are sections of the group. For example, sections (11-13-0-000-000) contain oil pan parts, gaskets, oil pans, drain plugs, etc. This structure works through all the BMW models.

18

18-00-0-000-000

Exhaust system. Mufflers, down pipes, hangers, gaskets, etc. Sometimes things you think should be in one section will show up in another section. Example, catalytic converters are considered part of the motor, so they go in section 11. You might think they would be in section 18 with the exhaust? Why do they do this? Who knows?
